If your Recovery Focus is Moisture Recovery, your curls may be showing signs that they need greater softness, flexibility or support retaining moisture.

Dryness is one of the most common curl concerns, but the answer is not always simply to add more product.

When curls begin to feel rough, brittle, dull or less flexible than usual, it can be a sign that the hair is struggling to retain the moisture it needs. Cleansing habits, styling, heat, colour, environmental exposure and product build-up can all influence how the hair feels and behaves.

Moisture Recovery is about creating the conditions for your curls to feel more supple and hydrated again — without overwhelming them.

What you maybe noticing

Your curls may feel:

·       dry or rough even after wash day

·       less soft than they once did

·       prone to tangling or snapping

·       dull rather than naturally lustrous

·       thirsty again shortly after styling

·       increasingly dependent on heavy creams or oils

One important distinction: dry-feeling hair does not necessarily need more layers of product.

Sometimes the first step is making sure water and conditioning ingredients can reach the hair effectively.

1. Start with an effective cleanse

Conditioners and treatments perform best when the hair has been properly cleansed.

If heavy stylers, oils, butters or mineral build-up have accumulated on the hair, continually layering conditioning products over them can leave curls feeling coated rather than hydrated.

A periodic clarifying or deeper cleanse can help reset the foundation of your routine.

The aim is not to strip the hair. It is to remove enough residue for the products that follow to work effectively.

2. Condition with intention

Focus conditioner through the lengths of the hair and give it enough water and time to work.

For textured hair, the slip created during conditioning can also help reduce unnecessary friction while detangling.

You are looking for hair that feels:

·       supple

·       smooth

·       flexible

·       easier to detangle

The goal is not simply for the hair to feel coated.

3. Treat when your curls ask for it

A richer treatment can be useful when curls feel particularly depleted, especially after:

·       protective styling

·       heat exposure

·       swimming

·       colour services

·       periods of unusually dry-feeling hair

But a deep treatment does not automatically need to be part of every wash day.

Observe your hair and respond to what it is showing you.

4. Style on sufficiently wet hair

Water should do much of the early work in your styling routine.

Applying leave-ins, creams or stylers to sufficiently wet hair can improve distribution and may allow you to achieve the result you want with less product.

If your curls feel dry again only hours after styling, adding another layer of product is not always the best first response.

Review the entire wash-day process.

Your Moisture Recovery framework

A simple starting point:

Cleanse → Condition → Hydrate → Style → Protect

For a regular wash day:

Moisturising cleanser → conditioner → leave-in if required → styler

For a periodic reset:

Deeper cleanse → conditioning treatment → simplified styling routine

How often you clarify or deep condition should depend on your scalp, your styling habits and how your hair responds.

There is no universal schedule.

What progress can look like

Look for:

·       greater softness

·       improved flexibility

·       easier detangling

·       more consistent curl formation

·       less need to continually add product

·       curls that feel hydrated rather than coated

Curator's Note

More moisture is not always the answer to dryness.

At Emerson, we look at the entire routine: how you cleanse, how your products layer, how your curls respond to the UAE environment and whether your current products are still serving you.

Recovery begins with understanding what your curls actually need — then doing less, more intentionally.
