Reviewed October 2026 · The Emerson Curly Hair Gel Guide
Traditionally, curly hair gels have been the go-to styling product for definition and/or hold.
In the Middle East, when choosing a gel it should be considered alongside the climate, a gel that can support your curls through Dubai heat, humidity and the constant shift between outdoor weather and air-conditioned interiors.
Living in the UAE, we look beyond whether a gel simply offers “definition”.
We consider how much structure it creates, the kind of hold it gives, how it behaves when layered, how heavy it feels on the hair and, most importantly, what job it plays within your routine.
Contrary to popular belief, the strongest hold gel is not automatically the best gel for your desired finish.
The Short Answer To Choosing A Curly Hair Gel Based on Finish
If humidity resistance and lasting hold are your priority, Miche Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Gel is our first place to look.
For a concentrated gel with firm structure and shine, Innersense I Create Hold is a strong contender.
For strong definition with a more flexible finish, consider The Doux Big Poppa.
If you want substantial hold with a protein-free formula, Jessicurl Spiralicious deserves a place on the shortlist.
If what your curls need most is slip, enhanced curl clumping and a better styling base, Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curly Magic plays a very different and extremely useful role.
At a Glance: Which Curl Gel Should You Choose?
| Gel | We would choose it for | Hold | Finish/Feel | Role in your routine |
| Miche Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Gel | Maximum humidity defence + lasting wash-and-go definition | Strong | Firm cast | Dedicated anti-humidity top-hold gel |
| Innersense I Create Hold | Firm structure and shine | Strong | Structured, glossy cast | Finishing, sealing top gel |
| The Doux Big Poppa | Strong definition with flexibility and versatility | Firm but flexible | Soft, touchable cast | Stand-alone styler / stronger styling layer |
| Jessicurl Spiralicious | Strong hold without protein | Strong | Firm cast that scrunches soft | Long-wear finishing gel |
| Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic | Curl clumping, slip and elongation | Soft to Medium | Lightweight, fluid definition | Excellent base gel |
The Emerson distinction: these five gels are not interchangeable. The right choice starts with your desired outcome or finish.
Before choosing a gel: what actually happens to your curls in Dubai and UAE humidity?
One of the most common things we hear is: “I just need a stronger gel.”
Often at times you do, but its not a blanket rule.
Humidity resistance is partly about hold, but the final result is influenced by the entire styling environment you create around your curls: including how clean the hair is, how much conditioning product sits underneath the styler, how wet the hair is during application, how evenly product is distributed and whether the style is allowed to dry completely before the cast is disturbed.
That is exactly why two people can use the same styling gel and see completely different results.
If your curls feel well moisturised but you notice your curl clumps begin to unravel within minutes of being outdoors, you may need more styling structure.
If they feel coated, dull and frizzy, adding another layer of strong gel may simply be preserving an underlying build-up problem.
If you spot inconsistent styling results before your curls have even dried, the issue may be curl formation and clumping, rather than hold alone.
So instead of asking only: “Which gel is strongest?” We look at what your styling routine needs the gel to do.

1. Miche Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Firm Hold Hair Gel
Best for: serious humidity defence + firm, long-lasting definition
If the curl concern is: “My wash-and-go looks great indoors and starts unravelling as soon as I spend time outside,”
Miche Tropical Oasis is the first gel on this list we would look to.
Unlike a general curl defining gel that happens to provide good hold, Tropical Oasis is explicitly formulated and positioned as an anti-humidity, strong-hold gel for wavy, curly and coily hair.
We recommend applying directly to soaking wet hair, working in sections by raking or smoothing the gel onto the hair shaft. Allow the gel to fully set with a diffuser or a hooded dryer before fluffing or scrunching.
The formulation composition is particularly interesting. Alongside humectants aloe vera juice and glycerin, the formula contains Maltodextrin/VP Copolymer, a film-forming styling polymer that contributes to the strong set and hold. Hydrolysed quinoa protein is also present in the formula for strengthening benefits.
Our view: This gel has an extremely clear role in a routine - focused equally on definition and hold, in the peak of humidity. Humidity is one of the major challenges curly and textured hair faces in the Middle East. This gel is specifically formulated for it.
When definition longevity is the priority, this is the gel to reach for.
Choose Miche Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Gel when:
Your curls form quite well but need considerably more hold, for styling results that can last up to Day 5 and beyond.
Think twice if: Your curls already feel rigid, brittle or overloaded and you haven't established whether the underlying problem is actually hold.

2. Innersense I Create Hold
Best for: concentrated and firm structure with a glossy shine
I Create Hold is one of the more concentrated-feeling styling gels in this edit, a little does go a long way.
It's a honey-based styling gel providing firm hold, curl definition and shine, with aloe vera as a prominent part of the formula. Recommended particularly for loose curls through to tighter curl textures.
The formula includes Hydroxyethylcellulose, Maltodextrin Copolymer and Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer - ingredients that contribute to the structure of the styling film alongside glycerin, honey extract and botanical extracts.
Our view: We reach for I Create Hold when structure matters.
This is not the gel we would describe as barely-there styling.
It is particularly useful when a customer tells us that lighter gels give beautiful results on wash day but there simply isn't enough structure to maintain the curl formation she created.
Like most gels in this edit, it contains humectants (glycerin and honey extract), which draw water towards the hair. In peak humidity that can mean pulling moisture from the air into the strand. Here, the film formers do the protective work by setting a cast that slows that exchange. How it performs ultimately depends on what sits underneath it, application and the rest of the styling routine.
This is why we prefer to recommend it based on how a customer's curls behave, rather than repeating a blanket rule about individual ingredients.
Choose I Create Hold when:
you want firm structure, pronounced curl clumping and a polished, high-shine result.
Think twice if:
your curls are easily overloaded or you already know you prefer very lightweight stylers.

3. The Doux Big Poppa Defining Gel
Best for: strong definition with more flexibility and movement
Big Poppa sits in a slightly different place, it's a humidity-resistant defining gel designed to create durable definition while retaining flexibility and movement. For best results, we recommend always working with freshly washed, soaking-wet hair.
It also pairs exceptionally well with The Doux Mousse Def for added humidity defence and volume.
The ingredient profile includes styling polymers alongside babassu oil, hydrolysed keratin and moringa seed oil for strengthening support to reinforce the hair structure and improve curl elasticity.
Our view: Big Poppa is the versatile all-rounder in this five-gel edit.
It provides enough structure to make it relevant for UAE conditions, but its value isn't simply “maximum hold”.
We love this gel if you're looking for :
- definition
- frizz control
- a tried and tested wash-and-go staple
- long-lasting curls that still retain natural movement.
It can also work across more than one styling use case beyond wash-and-gos, it's a great styler for twists, slickbacks, buns and other more defined styles.
Choose Big Poppa when:
You want substantial definition and humidity support without making maximum hold or cast the goal.
Think twice if:
You specifically want the firmest hold or cast possible.

4. Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel
Best for: firm cast, protein-free hold
Spiralicious is an excellent example of why ingredient and styling preferences matter when comparing strong-hold gels.
Spiralicious is Jessicurl's stronger-hold gel for medium and thick waves, curls and coils, with long-lasting definition and frizz control. It is also the only protein-free option in this edit.
The ingredient profile leans heavily on polyquats, specifically Polyquaternium-69 and Polyquaternium-11, which are key contributors to blocking humidity effects, frizz control and longer lasting definition.
It creates a hard cast during drying that can then be scrunched out once the hair is completely dry using a lightweight oil for extra sealing and shine.
Our View: Spiralicious earns its place because it gives us a different answer to the same question.
If you want substantial hold but don't necessarily want a protein-based styler, this becomes a particularly useful comparison against options such as Miche Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Gel or The Doux Big Poppa.
The key to making this gel work well for your curls is adapting the amount used to your curl density. If the preference is more definition and elongation, pair this with Jessicurl Confident Coils, using Spiralicious as the finishing, setting top layer.
This is what we look for when curating products on our platform, understand and testing the best product options for specific use cases, particularly when the desired finish is known.
Choose Spiralicious when:
you want a strong, cast-forming gel and specifically prefer a protein-free styling formula.
Think twice if:
your hair is very fine or loses volume easily. Quantity matters.

5. Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic
Best for: curl clumping, slip, elongation and creating the styling foundation
Curly Magic belongs in the edit for a different reason to some of the gels we've explored so far.
A humectant-based curl stimulator that adds definition, soft to medium hold and elongation while helping tame frizz. With a fluid, loose consistency, it applies best on soaking-wet hair for easy distribution through the length of the hair. Consider it almost as a leave-in conditioner in gel form, with the conditioning and smoothing properties derived from the botanical profile of aloe, marshmallow root and nettle.
Why it works in heat and humidity, the botanical element of the product formula offers the slip for superb definition and elongation, even on the tightest curl textures, paired with the cuticle reinforcing ingredients including film formers and protein, helps to seal any gaps in the hair shaft that can lead to excessive moisture being drawn in, minimising frizz.
Our View: Curly Magic is where we make a key distinction: curl formation and humidity resistant hold are not exactly the same job.
For many with textured hair, Curly Magic is brilliant at helping strands organise into defined, elongated curl groups with excellent slip, which makes an exceptional base styling gel.
If your primary concern is that your curls never clump properly in the first place, immediately reaching for the hardest possible top gel misses part of the problem. Curly Magic should be the first port of call, to create that organised foundation and grouping of curls.
Then, where additional styling longevity is required, it can be followed with an appropriate stronger-hold styler.
This base gel to hold layer approach is something we increasingly use and recommend when one product cannot deliver the complete styling result we want.
Choose Curly Magic when:
curl clumping, elongation and easy product distribution are as important as hold.
Think twice if:
your sole objective is the strongest possible barrier against extreme humidity. There are more purpose-built choices in this edit for that particular job.

So which gel is best for Dubai, UAE humidity?
There isn't one universal winner because these five gels solve slightly different styling concerns. If we were to simplify the decision:
If humidity resistance is your number-one priority: Miche Tropical Oasis Anti-Humidity Gel
If your curls need substantial structure and shine: Innersense I Create Hold
If you want strong hold with a more flexible finish: The Doux Big Poppa
If you want strong hold without protein: Jessicurl Spiralicious
If you need slip, curl formation and a strong styling base: Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic
Our rule: Ensure that your styling gel is chosen for the desired outcome. However, your styling gel should not be considered the only influence on your styling results.
This is the aspect we think matters most. A strong hold curl gel won't compensate indefinitely for:
- product or mineral build-up
- excess moisture
- poor distribution
- insufficient water during application
- disrupting your curls before the cast has formed
- or choosing a product that simply doesn't suit the behaviour of your curls.
Humidity resistance is built through the correct routine, not solely your styling products.
The gel provides a structural layer. The condition of your curls and application technique still determine how products perform.
This is why we at Emerson approach curl care by condition, behaviour and environment and not by curl type alone.
